A self cleaning oven is designed to make one of the least enjoyable kitchen jobs easier. Instead of relying on strong chemical sprays and long periods of scrubbing, it uses either very high heat or a smaller amount of heat with water to loosen or break down food residue. The feature is useful, but the name can be misleading. The oven still needs preparation before the cycle and a final wipe afterward.
